Though he lives in San Francisco, Devonwho is probably most often associated with the LA beat scene that revolves around the Brainfeeder label and Low End Theory. He’s made hip-hop and funk-influenced beats for labels like All City and Fresh Selects, and Perfect Stranger will mark his first solo release for Portland-based crew Dropping Gems. It’s also his first full-length to date, but it actually comprises two self-released EPs from 2012 (along with a slew of remixes from Dropping Gems artists like Benito and Citymouth for the digital version only). Jumping from hip-hop beats to chiptune to more laid-back jams, the LP makes for a solid summary of Devonwho’s established sound. It also features collaborations from Bay Area keyboard player and vocalist Teeko, as well as Zeroh and Swarvy. Perfect Strangers will see release on digital and cassette formats on August 13th, 2013.
